Where have all the Crafters gone?

There is a disturbing under current crossing this country. It is the loss of an Americathat existed just a few years ago and prior. This was an America full of people who used their god given talents to produce goods and services. Somewhere in the past few years the concept of making things has disappeared and it’s a real shame. Because this concept lead to many an entrepreneur creating a successful business. Not long ago there were home made baked goods, soups, and clothing in the majority of American households.Check out your school parties or bake sale and see what’s there the majority of products were home made at the local bakery. Home made Halloween Costumes now come fromWalmart or the local Halloween stores. The idea that American manufacturing is dying is correct but even has taken hold on the small mom and pop level. I recently attended several craft shows as a vender of hand crafted Skeletons for Halloween. The Skeletons are made from recycled milk jugs and were inexpensive and a great entrepreneurial idea. When walking around the shows there was one thing that was missing from every craft show, crafts. There were Chiropractors, cheap jewelry from China, purses made overseas, plastic food containers, Pampered Chef venders, MaryKay Cosmetics, a couple people selling bake goods, and novelty items. But what was gone from the Craft Shows of years gone by were hand made wooden Christmas ornaments, picture frames, spice shelves or candles. No hand made knitted sweaters, hats, gloves and table covers or potholders. There were no ceramic pumpkins, Christmas trees, or mugs. No wooden rubber band guns, picture frames or sling shots. There were no hand made holiday wreaths. There were very few items that took any imagination, ingenuity, or labor. Most of the items were purchased pre-packaged bulk low cost imported items that were unboxed and placed on the crafters table. There were a few people that used some creativity to make up gift baskets etc. What does this tell us about up and coming entrepreneurs. Are we becoming a prepackaged society? Do most people who are starting their business ventures only interested in the no work opportunities. If so it is a very sad reflection on our future. What this country needs now more than ever are small business entrepreneurs who are willing to find a need and fill it. People who are creative and can take miscellaneous items and combine them to create a new better product.  People who use their God given talents to create jobs and incomes for others through their efforts. If we ever intend to bring back manufacturing in this country we need to start at ground level. Get out that knitting needle, that saw and paint brush, and lets get people working one job at a time.
